Eknathji Ranade: A Life Dedicated to the Nation

A concise biography of Shri Eknath Ranade

1914 – 1982

Early Life & Family Roots

Shri Eknath Ranade was the youngest of eight siblings, born on 19 November 1914 at Timtala in Amaravati District of Maharashtra. His family hailed originally from Vilhe village in Rajapur Taluk of Ratnagiri district in the Konkan region. His father, Shri Ramakrishnarao Vinayak Ranade, served with the Great Indian Peninsular Railways, while his mother Ramabai came from the Barve family of Pune.

The Turning Point at Nagpur

Known as Nath in his childhood, he was sent to Nagpur in 1921 to stay with his eldest brother Baburao. His schooling at Phadanavispura and later New English High School shaped his early discipline. In 1926, under the guidance of his brother-in-law Shri Annaji Sohoni, Nath attended an RSS Shakha — a moment that transformed the course of his life.

Intellectual Awakening

While studying philosophy and law, Eknathji turned to the Upanishads to counter missionary propaganda. Finding them difficult to interpret, he discovered the works of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda's life and vision became the guiding force behind Eknathji's own mission.

Pracharak & Organizer Par Excellence

Joining the Sangh full-time in 1938, Eknathji served as Pracharak across Mahakoshal, Madhya Bharat, and later Poorvanchal. His organisational abilities and phenomenal memory earned wide recognition. During the Partition, he played a key role in Calcutta by organising the Vastuhara Sahayata Samiti to support refugees.

The Rock & the Living Memorial

In 1963, Guruji Golwalkar entrusted Eknathji with the historic task of building the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Even as the monument rose from the sea, Eknathji envisioned its living counterpart — the Vivekananda Kendra, dedicated to spiritually oriented national service.

Final Years & Legacy

The relentless pace of service took a toll on his health. After a severe stroke in 1980, he lost much of his memory and eyesight, yet his resolve remained unshaken. On 22 August 1982, Shri Eknath Ranade attained Nirvana in Chennai. He was cremated at Kanyakumari as the saffron flag atop the Rock Memorial was lowered at sunset.

The memorial of stone stands firm, but his true legacy lives on through institutions, ideas, and inspired lives.

"A worker is one who is unperturbed by success or failure."
